In the 1990s, international organisations established close ties with the countries of the Western Balkans to help create stable and prosperous democratic countries and support them on the road to integration into the EU and NATO. The aim of this article is, through methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, generalisation and comparison, to approximate the main reasons for the military involvement of EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to describe main reasons for the continued military presence in this Balkan country. This article reviews the longest, almost eighteen years lasting military operation of the EU, EUFOR Althea, and concludes with its possible future development.en_US
