The article provides a statistical analysis of serious industrial accidents (SIAs) in European Union Member States between 2000 and 2023, with a particular focus on the general chemicals manufacturing sector, which recorded the highest number of SIAs. Utilizing data from the eMARS database, the study examined 124 accident reports from this high-risk sector, accounting for 10.4% of all recorded incidents. The findings revealed that toxic spills were the predominant physical consequence, with primary causes identified as technical equipment failures, improper working practices, and organizational deficiencies. Furthermore, the study underscores the impact of the SEVESO III Directive, implemented in 2015, in significantly reducing accident occurrences, particularly in recent years. These results highlight the ongoing need to enhance safety measures and risk management strategies in industrial operations.
