The Blended Wing Body is a revolutionary aircraft concept with the potential to surpass present-day conventional aircraft regarding aerodynamic efficiency, and to lower the environmental impact of the aviation industry. However, despite over thirty years of contemporary research, there is still no operational blended wing body airliner, suggesting the presence of multiple unresolved issues pertaining to this design. This article investigates various operational and technical aspects related to the design process of BWB aeroplanes and their influence on the resulting aerodynamic performance. The aim of this work is a multidisciplinary analysis with focus on aircraft structure, operational safety and ultimately on the inter-comparison of required and achievable flight characteristics.
