Abstract
The paper discusses the issue of airport slots and possible implementations of market mechanisms into the airport capacity allocation system. To understand the key facts related to slot allocation, it contains a basic theoretical definition. Subsequently, the paper focuses on slot allocation rules in the EU. The views from the literature on the introduction of a slot market mechanism in the EU are also confronted, with a focus on primary and secondary trading as well as on the possibilities of involving third parties in the trading system. Furthermore, experiences with airport slot trading in the UK and the US are described. Alternatives for future developments in the EU are also set out, with a focus on reform of the slot allocation system in the UK and the European Union. An evaluation of the findings is presented at the end of the paper.
