Possible modifications of the automobile piston petrol engine for aircraft propulsion: cooling, starting and ignition system
(University of Zilina, 2021) Malíková, Zuzana; Čerňan, Jozef
The main goal of our work was to design a possible modification of the automobile piston petrol engine for aircraft propulsion and subsequently its implementation. The paper can be divided into four main units. The first part is aimed on the history and development of automobile and aircraft piston engines. We focused on their construction and gradual improvement of performance. The second unit is dedicated to theoretical knowledge of the cooling, starting and ignition systems. In the cooling system, we mainly described air cooling and the required components needed for that process. In the starting system, we paid attention to the necessity of starting gears, their types and uses. We described mainly electric starters and then we attached a diagram of the starting system. In the ignition system, we described the structural elements required for the process of igniting a mixture of fuel and air. In the following section, we described the engine used for aeroconversion, its parameters and the reason for its selection. In the last part we deal with the practical part of the paper. We created the component models needed for the complete construction of these systems, which were created in the computer program Autodesk Inventor Professional 2021. We prepared the cooling system for more efficient air cooling by adding deflectors, in the starting system we used a starter with a reducer to increase torque and reduce fuel consumption and in the ignition system, we proposed a modification of the flywheel made of dural material, which would reduce the overall weight of the engine. The result of our work is a finished design for aeroconversion of a flat four-cylinder engine. The modified engine is suitable for ultralight aircraft.

Modification possibilities of automotive power plant for aviation purposes: fuel system and turbocharger system
(University of Zilina, 2021) Pukač, Andrej; Čerňan, Jozef
The objective of this article is to develop and demonstrate modification of automotive engine for aviation purposes. Automotive engine in aircraft has its pros and cons, but It can be good economical alternative to power plants such as Rotax engines which can be expensive, especially in Ultralight category where the rules of certification are different than for CS-LSA or CS-23 category aircraft. In first part I analyse actual state of real engine and describe operational problems, which shall be improved for better operation in aircraft. In second part I demonstrate practical solutions of turbocharger system and fuel system. In these systems I tried to use the most modern technologies which however will be reliable enough for aviation use, where the safety is priority number one.

Design of lubrication system, design of motor bed, selecting of propeller for aircraft piston engine
(University of Zilina, 2021) Suk, Michal; Čerňan, Jozef
I will briefly address the three orientations of my paper in this scientific article. I will not go into details in the article. In the first part I will briefly describe the design procedure of a piston engine lubrication system, the requirements that a lubrication system should meet with respect to different types of piston engines and their focus, elements of the lubrication system and the properties of oils as lubricating fluids. In the next part I will describe the types and constructions of aircraft engine beds, technical requirements for aircraft engine beds and individual loads that the aircraft engine bed must withstand. In the last part I will focus on aircraft propellers. I will explain the basic principle of the propeller, the individual rules for selecting a propeller for a piston engine, safety requirements for an aircraft propeller and the dividing of basic types of aircraft propellers for aircraft piston engines.

System optimization demonstrator for aircraft propulsion technology using fuel cells
(University of Zilina, 2021) Uhlár, Erik; Čerňan, Jozef
In order to help accelerate transition to sustainable and eco-friendly personal transportation in a single engine piston aircraft category we’ve developed a simulation software platform of hydrogen powered aircraft for further research and development. Measurements were carried out on a real reference airplane Cessna 172 R and were crosschecked with an airplane flight manual as well as a computer flight simulation. We also focused on a software-based safety and economy optimization by components usage ratio improvement and inflight energy production and transfer limitations.

Ignition systems of combustion piston engine and possibility of its optimization
(University of Zilina, 2021) Vorlíček, Marek; Čerňan, Jozef
This paper explains the basic definition of ignition, combustion and description of the ignition system functionality. The ignition systems are divided according to established criteriums into the most used types and descriptions of each ignition system components. It focuses on ignition timing and circumstances that affect it and how they influence the observed parameters. I am using ignition timing as an instrument for the observation and optimization of ignition. These practices are tested on piston engine in the practical part of this paper. It describes the modification of the timing curve, measuring of engine power and comparison between each curve. It is an analysis of engine performance under different conditions. The most efficient timing curve is chosen and further evaluated. The used engine for this paper was a rebuild from a car engine used in Trabant 601, VEB Automobilwerke automobile.
